The Impact Of Barcode Scanner Technology And Its Functions

Our world has turned out to be an ever growing one and industrial revolution and the rise of technology have certainly made an impact in contributing towards the above mentioned fact. Technology has invaded every sphere of our lives and made us heavily depend upon it. Same holds true for barcode scanner technology. The scanner technology has revolutionized the process of inventory control. And now they are everywhere around us keeping track of product information and inventory levels.

Nowadays, they are also used for adding products into gift registries. Compromisingly and inevitably no one gives a second thought about the usage of barcode scanner technology. Most people take barcode scanners and barcode readers for granted.

It is pretty rare for anyone to think about how a simple sliding of a product across the scanner counter reacts with the name tag and the price of the product appearing on the monitor by just scanning through some weird label and a code that comes along with every product we purchase. In order to understand how the above mentioned operation works, one definitely needs to understand how barcodes are generated and how they work to identify the product itself.

Barcode is nothing but information in coded form. This coded form is what we call as the barcode and every barcode is unique and it contains details about the particular product. This information is compressed, coded and printed at the back of the product using a special coding language. The scanner on the other hand reads through the bar codes and translates it to the system giving details about the product and its price which normal humans cannot understand or decipher.

This barcode language is also quite easy to understand actually. It is a combination of specific symbols which equals a series of bar lines. These bar lines come in short, long along with varying spaces between them. Every part of the collection of bar lines denotes number of characters depending upon the date the code was actually entered into the barcode software.

Barcode software is in fact the basic initial point or primary stage of every barcode generation as well as barcode scanners systems. Without this software, the procedure that was mentioned above is absolutely impossible to be performed. Programmers use this software to enter details about a particular product and the system generates a barcode value or details for that particular product.

A sophisticated database is maintained to store details regarding every product as well as important files for the barcode software to function smoothly. This helps to keep track of products available in stock and out of stock, expiry details and other important facts about the products. It also enables smooth functioning and speeds up the updating process of the prices of these products.

Whenever the scanner reads a particular barcode, it tries to match it with the barcodes available within the database and finds out required information about the particular product. This system has made it practically possible to simultaneously take care of several customers in various supermarkets. In general it has made life quicker and comfortable.

A Powerful And Important Barcode Scanner Uses Surprisingly Simple Technology

For a technology that does so much to make our lives easier, barcode scanner technology is relatively simple. First, let’s talk about the making our lives easier part. Think about it. Can you define any part of your daily life that is not affected by barcodes? Your car has one. Your pantry and refrigerator have dozens of them. Your TV has one as does every other piece of electronics that you have at your home or office. And those are just the barcodes that you can see.

It’s a pretty good bet that each and every one of the items and products around you was shipped. It had a box or it was loaded on a pallet. Along the way it was stamped with a barcode or a sticker was plopped on. As the item made it’s way from distribution point to distribution point it was passed through some sort of barcode scanner. The scanner kept track of it all the way until it made it’s way to your hands.

This scenario is repeated millions of times a day all over the world. That’s pretty significant. Now, let’s turn to the actual technology. A barcode scanner really has only three key functional parts. The lighting system which is used to read the barcode, a sensor/converter which changes the signal from analog to digital, and a decoder which converts the digital signal to a format that will be understand by the computer that is reading the data from the scanner.

It is the job of the lighting system to provide enough illumination so that the sensor can read the data. LED lights or lasers are used for this. If the barcode scanner is the pen type then the pen will have to be run across the barcode in order to illuminate and read the data. Some scanners have multiple LED lights that can read more than one point on the barcode at a time.

When a laser is used it is compressed so it can fan out and illuminate and read the barcode. Laser illumination systems have quickly become popular because they can read the barcode from a further distance than is possible with LED. The power of the laser can be increased and at the same time the distance needed to accept the information lengthened. Full imagers that take advantage of LED lights can also be made powerful enough to compete with lasers for distance and focus.

Once the photo sensor has detected the light that is created by the lighting system the voltage fluctuates. It is this fluctuation that indicates the size and color of the bar in the barcode. Depending on whether or not white or black is detected the voltage wave takes shape. At this point the signal is still in analog form. The converter in the barcode scanner changes the signal to digital and sends it to the decoder.

The decoder then transmits the information to a computer. Once the computer receives the data it is put to work in a database that houses the information relevant to the product. The end user of the data can then manipulate the database to his or her specific needs.

However, the barcode scanning machine, especially the handheld ones, has emerged and made everything completely easier.

Most stores use barcode machine as a secondary scanning device, with the primary scanning device being the larger. Many barcode machine manufacturers produce a number of different barcode scanners, but you can tell a barcode scanning machine out simply just by the "handheld" in its name. A barcode scanning machine is obviously going to be much smaller than its stationary barcode scanner counterpart since it has to fit in the average sized hand.

The Benefits of Using a Quality Barcode Scanner

Handheld barcode scanners should be a staple in any store because it can make any transaction flow a bit more smoothly due to its flexible nature. If a customer were to purchase a large object that could not easily be ran across the stationary scanner or merely just could not fit anyways, then a handheld barcode scanners would be utilized. The large item could be left inside of the customer's cart and the sales clerk could then use the barode machine to maneuver around and scan the barcode; making the transaction that much easier for both parties involved.

There is not just one type of scanner; there are actually a few different types of barcode machine. Corded scanners are one type of handheld scanner and these handheld scanners have a cord that attaches the scanner to a power source. The disadvantage to this type of handheld barcode scanner is that it can only be used within the vicinity of the cord. If you are looking for more flexibility, then you could pay a little more and get a nice, new wireless barcode scanning machine.
